The term chattel house is a movable wooden house built on blocks. The English word chattel meant movable possessions. Chattel Houses were the innovative homes built by the formerly enslaved, date back to the 17th century, but became more popular with Emancipation in 1838, because freed slaves were a “landless peasantry”. They had to pay rent for a small plot of land on which they could erect modest wooden houses. The house had to be movable, in case they were dismissed or wanted to move.
